Binkowski Sets New Home Run Record in 3-1 Win Over Miami

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan softball defeated Miami (22-14, 7-2) 3-1 Saturday afternoon at home. The Broncos move to 15-17 overall, 6-3 in the Mid-American Conference and remain undefeated at home (4-0).

-In the bottom of the second inning, Junior Erin Binkowski hit a solo home run over the right field wall to put the Broncos up 2-0. It was her 11th home run of the season which sets a new WMU record for most home runs in a single season. Binkowski surpassed the 10 home run mark set by Lexi Jager in 2009.

-Senior Allyson Kus (10-9) pitched her 12th complete game of the season, Kus struck out five, allowed four hits. Miami's one run in the game was unearned.

-Junior Abby Stoner hit her third home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth to extend the Broncos lead to 3-1.

The Broncos manufactured the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Ivy Schaaf walked, Senior Melissa Palmer laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Schaaf to second. Senior shortstop Sabrina Gamboa put the ball in play and Miami's second baseman committed a fielding error allowing Schaaf to score.

In the third inning, Kus gave up a single to right field but promptly ended the inning on three straight ground balls. In the bottom of the inning, Binkowski led off, hitting a home run on the first pitch to right field to put the Broncos up 2-0.

In the fifth inning the Redhawks were able to get on the scoreboard after a fielding error by the Broncos. The Broncos responded in the sixth with Stoner hitting a solo shot to extend the lead to 3-1.

In the top of the seventh, Kat Lee started things off for the Redhawks with a walk but the Broncos infield finished things off with three straight putouts.

Due to inclement weather, tomorrow's game has been canceled. The Broncos will host Detroit on Tuesday April 12 at 3:30 p.m. and will face rival Central Michigan on Wednesday April 13 at home at 2 p.m.
