HOUSTON -- The Western Michigan track and field team wrapped up day one of competition at the 34th annual Victor Lopez Classic at Rice University on Friday evening.
With the bulk of the action taking place on Saturday, the Broncos competed in just three events on the day highlighted by the 1,500-meter run and junior Claire Gilbert's second place finish. In her first collegiate 1,500 Gilbert ran a time of 4:39.73 to pace the Broncos, finishing just 1.45 seconds behind Stephen F. Austin's Shelby Pesek in first place.
Also competing in the race was freshman Haley Ritsema and Amy Littlfield. Ritsema finished fourth in her section after running a time of 4:58.66. Littlefield finished with a time of 5:00.75.
In the 5,000-meter run Hanne Christensen was WMU's top finisher, taking 11th overall, but sixth among collegiate competitors, with a time of 17:50.49.
Savannah Dugan led the Broncos in the hammer throw after tossing a distance of 46.32m (151'11"). Brittany Casey finished just behind her with a distance of 45.11m (148').
