KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team will hit the road to face Cleveland State on Friday, March 4 at 1 p.m. before taking the week of spring break off.
The Broncos have moved up in the Oracle/ITA Men's Tennis Team Rankings, going from No. 69 last week to No. 62 this week. WMU is 9-4 this season, 6-0 at home and has won five of its last six games including a 5-2 win over Big Ten foe Michigan State last Saturday, Feb. 27 on the road. The Broncos lead the all-time series 4-1 with the Vikings.
In doubles play, the Broncos are led by the duo of junior Matt Hamilton/sophomore Maik Steiner, who carry an 18-4 record this season and are 6-1 this spring. Senior Ruben Greiner/junior Daniel Loebel are 11-5 this season, 7-3 this spring and a perfect 3-0 at the No. 2 spot. Senior Jimmy Beckwith and sophomore Jefta Kecic are 6-1 this season. WMU is 69-28 in doubles play this season.
In singles, freshman Matej Svjetlicic leads the team with a 22-8 record while Loebel is 17-8 and Hamilton is 16-7. Greiner enters with an 11-4 and has a team-high seven match winning streak while Loebel and Andrew Cahn (14-6) will come in on a four-match winning streak. The Broncos hold a 131-76 record this season in singles.
