Softball Falls to UT Martin in Extra Innings

Box Score KENNESAW, Ga.- The Western Michigan softball team fell in its final game of the Dr. Bobbie Bailey Memorial Tournament Sunday, dropping a 4-3 eight-inning affair to UT-Martin.

The Broncos went 2-2 over four games this weekend at the Bailey Memorial, hosted by Kennesaw State, bringing their season record to 3-6.

UT Martin broke a four-inning scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 1-0 lead. WMU didn't record its first hit until sophomore center fielder Aspen Williams reached on a bunt in the top of the inning.

The Broncos took a 2-1 lead off a two-run home run by junior Erin Binkowski in the top of the sixth. Junior third baseman Kelsea Cichocki cracked a leadoff double and Binkowski followed with a shot out to left field.

Binkowski's home run was her team-leading fifth of the year and 13th of her career. The right-handed slugger from Eaton Rapids, Mich., has eight hits this season and all but one has been for extra bases. She has five home runs and two doubles and her current slugging percentage is 1.136.

Western Michigan couldn't make the lead stand however as UT Martin was able to pull even in the bottom of the seventh after a one-out triple and an RBI single.

With the game tied at 2-2 and headed into extra innings the international tie-breaker format went in effect resulting in both teams starting their at bat with a runner at second base. With Courtney Sleeman at second, WMU junior Ivy Schaaf delivered a two-out RBI single to once again give the Broncos the lead, 3-2.

UT Martin played spoiler in the bottom of the eighth, plating two runs to take the 4-3 victory. The Seahawks loaded the bases after the awarded runner, a single and an intentional walk. Gracyn McBride had the game-winning hit, lacing a single to center to score two.

Senior Allyson Kus (2-3) threw a complete game and took the loss for the Broncos. She allowed just five hits and three earned runs and struck out five.

Next up for Western Michigan is its yearly trip to Florida to compete in the University of South Florida Under Armour Invitational, March 4-13.The Broncos will play a total of 12 games in Tampa and Clearwater during that stretch.
