KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's tennis team improved to 8-4 this season with a 7-0 win over Cleveland State Saturday afternoon at West Hills.
The duo of Tracy Kuhle/Melina Lyubomirova, who have been named the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Doubles Team of the Week for the three consecutive weeks, earned a 6-4 win in the No. 1 spot to clinch the doubles point for the Broncos and push their winning streak to seven matches. Barbare Eristavi/Katja Fevralev improved to 4-2 this season with a 6-2 win in the number two spot.
In single play, the Broncos swept the Vikings taking all but one set the entire match. Lyubomirova and Kuhle are each tied for the team lead in wins at 16-9 and 16-8, respectively. Freshman Denise Azcui improved to 12-9 this season with a 6-3, 6-0 win in the No. 6 spot to give the Broncos a 2-0 advantage. Lyubomirova earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1, Kuhle won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2, Eristavi won 6-1, 6-2 in No. 3, Fevralev earned a 7-5, 6-3 win in No. 4 while junior Meika Ashby battled out a 3-6, 6-3, 15-13 win at No. 5. Eristavi and Kuhle each moved their winning streak to four matches.
The Broncos return to action on Sunday, Feb. 28 as Chicago State comes to town. Match time is scheduled for 11 a.m. at West Hills where entrance is free.
