SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Western Michigan sophomore sprinter Ayiana Gaines ran the fourth-fastest indoor 400-meter dash time in program history to highlight the final day of the Meyo Invitational for the track and field team on Saturday.
Gaines took fifth overall after running the Mid-American Conference's fastest time so far this year at 54.35 seconds. Her time bumped down WMU greats Danielle Brown and Iris Campbell in the process. Her time, converted to 54.65 seconds due to track size, ranks behind Andrea Arnold (54.63), Krisy Mahome (54.49) and Becky Horn (54.19).
Gaines, who had a personal-best in the 200-meter dash on Friday, also helped Western Michigan's 4x400-meter relay team to its season at 3:45.02. Naiomi Dulaney, Jordan Anderson and Sarita Dotson also combined to help the Broncos win their heat and take seventh overall.
"It had been a while since we've been able to line up all four of them together and run them," said head coach Kelly Lycan. "Ayiana did a great job of giving us the lead in the second leg and the girls never looked back."
Anderson went on to run a new personal-best time of 2:12.88 seconds in the 800-meter run, her second personal-best in the event so far this season. Also performing well in the middle-distance events was junior Claire Gilbert, who ran a personal-best time of 4:56.72.
Over at Hillsdale College a few Broncos competed with Ashley White taking sixth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.96 seconds. White also took second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.03 seconds. Davonne Bolden finished right behind her with 26.22 and Keyera Lige finished sixth at 26.41 seconds.
