Gaines Breaks School Record at Jack Johns Classic

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Sophomore Ayiana Gaines broke the school 600-meter run record and the Western Michigan track and field team had two top collegiate finishes at the Jack Johnson Classic at the University of Minnesota on Saturday.

Gaines ran a time of 1:32.98 to take second overall but was the top collegiate finisher in the race, breaking Victoria Chatman's old record by one second. Alena Brooks, an unattached professional runner, took first with a time of 1:31.82.

Fellow sophomore Maria McDaniel was the other top collegiate finisher for the Broncos. McDaniel took second overall in the 3,000-meter run with a 9:31.97, finishing just behind Maddie Van Beek of Brooks Running at 9:24.30. The time, converted to 9:27.11 due to track size, currently ranks second in the Mid-American Conference. Junior Claire Gilbert finished in seventh in her first career 3,000-meter run, finishing with a time of 10:00.31.

"I feel like we are just starting to like we have a little something going on," said head coach Kelly Lyacan. "Now we can get into February with some of the biggest meets of our season coming up."

Another bright spot for the Broncos was the 200-meter dash. WMU placed three runners in the top seven, with junior Sarita Dotson took second overall with a season-best time of 24.88 seconds. Gaines took sixth with a time of 25.36 and junior Naiomi Dulaney finished right behind her with a time of 25.37.

Senior Jordan Anderson ran a time of 2:16.28 to finished fifth in the 800-meter dash.

WMU's top highlight in the field events was the triple jump. Gaines took fourth overall and third collegiately with a distance of 37 feet, 3.25 inches. Diajah Ruffin took eighth overall and seventh collegiately with a distance of 36 feet, 5 inches.

Western Michigan heads back to the University of Notre Dame for the famed Meyo Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
