Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan hockey team lost another close game to the second-ranked North Dakota Fighting Hawks on Saturday, losing 2-1 at Lawson Ice Arena.
Lukas Hafner had a stellar night in net, stopping 35 shots but the Broncos only tallied once on the night with Cam Johnson making 28 saves to earn his 13th win of the season. Michael Rebry netted the lone goal for WMU (7-16-3, 4-11-1-1 NCHC).
After a scoreless first period Shane Gersich tallied first for the Fighting Hawks at 9:04 in the second period. Johnny Simonson found Gersich at the right edge of the left circle and he punched it past Hafner for his sixth goal of the season.
Western Michigan tied it up 1-1 at 16:26 in the second period on Rebry's fifth goal of the season. Rebry picked the puck up from Aidan Muir, who was battling on the right wall, and skated into the right circle. Rebry used a UND defender to screen his shot and beat Johnson on his glove side. Frederik Tiffles also tallied an assist on the goal.
The two teams exchanged penalties to create 4-on-4 hockey but Taylor Fleming was called for hooking, creating a 4-on-3 power play for North Dakota. Shortly after the penalty was called Brock Boeser netted a goal from the left circle, his third of the weekend and 18th overall, for the game-winner.
WMU had its chances in the third period, outshooting UND 7-6, and had two power play opportunities but didn't find the net.
The Fighting Hawks outshot the Broncos 37-29 on the night and were 1-for-6 on the power play.
Western Michigan is off next weekend and then heads to Omaha for a pair of games on Feb. 12 and 13. The Friday game will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network with a 7:30 puck drop. Saturday's tilt can be seen on NCHC.tv with an 8 p.m. puck drop. Both games will also be broadcast on the Bronco Radio Network.
