Baseball's Keegan Akin Named to D1Baseball.com's Top-300 List

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Junior Keegan Akin of the Western Michigan baseball team was named to the College Baseball Top-300 Preseason List by D1Baseball.com last week.

"It is good for our program and nice for Keegan as well, but he is a team player and does not get caught up in the hoopla; he is very talented, humble, confident and has worked very hard.  He deserves this ranking," WMU head coach Billy Gernon said. "We need Keegan to give us his best effort every time out and to impose his will on hitters.  He has electric stuff and is in a really good place right now.  We will feed off of him and I am sure he will be ready to go every time we hand him the ball. He has done a really good job handling the swarm of professional scouts who have made there way to Kalamazoo to see and meet him."

Akin, a left-handed pitcher from Midland, Mich, was No. 100 on the list making him the second highest rated Mid-American Conference (MAC) prospect and highest rated left-hander from the MAC. Only four of the 12 MAC schools had players named to this prestigous list. Akin has a career record of 10-9 with a 3.88 ERA. In 169.1 innings pitched, he has recorded 137 strikeouts and 76 walks over the past two seasons.

Akin, recorded a team-high 75 strikeouts over 81.0 innings pitched last season. His 75 K's in a single season were the most by a WMU pitcher since 2011. He struck out 10 batters over six innings against UT-Martin in his second career start with the Broncos. His first career win was recorded first against Austin-Peay striking out five over five innings, while yielding two runs and four hits. Against Bowling Green he had a dominant performance going 8.1 innings allowing just one run on seven hits and striking out four. Akin threw complete game shutout allowing just six hits, giving up one walk and striking out eight to earn his third victory of the season and completing sweep of Buffalo. He was named MAC West Pitcher of the Week following the performance.
