Broncos Fall to No. 5/4 Huskies

Box Score ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- Western Michigan fell on the road at National Collegiate Hockey Conference leaders No. 5/4 St. Cloud State, 8-2 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey center on Friday night.

The Huskies jumped on the Broncos, scoring five goals in the first two periods to take a 5-0 lead into the third period before Michael Rebry struck at 1:16 for his fourth goal of the season. Rebry took a pass from Corey Schueneman down the ice, spun and fired it past SCSU goalie Charlie Lundgren to cut the lead to 5-1.

Goals by Patrick Newell and Jimmy Schuldt pushed the lead back to 7-1 before Sheldon Dries netted his 10th of the season. Dries split two defenders and kicked the puck to himself before putting it past Lundgren at 9:06 in the third period. 

Blake Winiecki added a power play goal with 54 seconds left in the game to put the final score at 8-2. 

Husky senior forward Joey Benik opened up the game with a goal at 14:04 in the first period to give them a 1-0 lead. It was the first of five points for Benik on the night. Ethan Prow, Kalle Kossila, Newell, and David Morely all tallied in the second period.

Western Michigan outshot St. Cloud State 36-31 on the night. The Huskies kept the Broncos scoreless on five power plays, while converting on 2-of-5. 

The two teams face off for the final time in the regular season on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET. The game can be seen live at NCHC.tv and heard on the Bronco Radio Network.
