Men's Tennis Readies for doubleheader at Purdue

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team will continue its spring season with a trip down to West Lafayette, Ind. to face Eastern Kentucky and battle the host Purdue later. The match time for the Colonels is scheduled for 9 a.m. while the Broncos will take on the Boilermakers at 1 p.m. 

WMU is off to a 1-0 start after beating Illinois-Chicago 6-1 on Monday, Jan. 18 at home. In the match, the Broncos won five of six in singles competition as Matt Hamilton (No. 1), Matej Svjetlicic (No. 2), Maik Steiner (No. 3), Ruben Greiner (No. 4) and Daniel Loebel (No. 5) all earned wins over the Flames individuals. In doubles, the duos of Hamilton/Steiner, Greiner/Loebel and Jimmy Beckwith/Stephen Payne helped the Broncos sweep the doubles competition. Beckwith/Payne stayed perfect on the year moving to 5-0. Svjetlicic moved to 18-3 in singles play on Monday and Hamilton improved to 11-3. 

EKU enters the match with a record of 0-3 after falling to Southern Illinois at Carbondale, Kentucky and Tennessee. WMU leads the all-time series 7-2 with the Colonels. Purdue enters this match at 2-0 with wins over IUPUI and Toledo, both coming by the score of 7-0. The Broncos lead the all-time series 23-21 with the Boilermakers.

Following the doubleheader, the Broncos return to action with a home match against Green Bay on Friday, Jan. 29 at West Hills.
