Women's Tennis Heads to Notre Dame and Returns Home to Face Detroit This Week

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's tennis team will continue its spring season by traveling to Notre Dame and finishing the week off by hosting Detroit. The Broncos head down to face the Fighting Irish on Tuesday, Jan. 19 with match time scheduled for 6 p.m. and later host the Titans on Friday, Jan. 22 at West Hills starting at 1 p.m.


The Broncos are coming off back-to-back wins to open the spring season starting with a 6-1 win over Oakland and a 7-0 win over Valparaiso, both of which came at home on Saturday, Jan. 16. First year head coach Ryan Tomlinson earned his first career win for the Broncos and has them out to a perfect 2-0 start.


This will be the first action of the spring season for the Fighting Irish, who come in as the No. 33 ranked team in the Oracle/ITA Division I Women's National Team Rankings on Jan. 5. They feature one player ranked in the singles in Quinn Gleason (No. 57) and a doubles team as well in Gleason/Monica Robinson (No. 32). Detroit comes in 0-1 after a 5-2 loss to Bowling Green at home.


In singles play throughout both matches on Saturday, sophomore Olivia Myers went 2-0 in the No. 1 slot to improve her record to 4-3 this season. Freshman Melina Lyubomirova earned a pair of wins to move to 11-4 this season, the highest win total on the team. Junior Barbare Eristavi earned a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 3 singles spot to move to 5-5 this season. Freshman Katja Fevralev went 2-0 on the day to move to 10-1 this season. Freshman Denise Azcui moved her season record to 8-4 with a pair of wins in the No. 6 singles spot. Junior Meika Ashby earned a 6-4, 6-3 win in the No. 4 singles spot against Valpo. In doubles play, the duo of Tracy Kuhle/Lyubomirova went 2-0 on the day to improve to 6-2 this season.
