KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team will open up the spring season with a dual match against nonconference foe Illinois-Chicago on Monday, Jan. 18 at West Hills starting at 1 p.m. The Broncos lead the all-time series 22-0, with the Flames.
Head coach Dave Morin, who is entering his 20th season for the Broncos, has an all-time record of 368-219 and has claimed seven MAC regular season titles and 10 MAC tournament titles in his time at WMU.
"Everybody is looking forward to playing this part of the season as it's much more fun to play as a team then in the tournaments," Morin said. "I think everyone will still be working out the cobwebs a bit but I'm looking forward to a good match with a tough UIC team."
Entering the spring season, WMU as team is 84-52 in singles and 42-19 in doubles through seven different fall tournaments. In singles, freshman Matej Svjetlicic leads the team in wins with a 17-3 record while senior Andrew Cahn (10-5) and junior Matt Hamilton (10-4) both have reached double-figure win totals. Maik Steiner and Jefta Kecic, who are both returning First Team All-MAC selections, are 8-6 and 6-5, respectively.
In doubles, the duo of senior Stephen Payne and Kecic come into the spring ranked No. 37 in the Oracle/ITA National rankings with a record of 3-1, including a win over a nationally ranked team. The doubles team of Hamilton/Steiner lead the team in wins with a 12-3 record while senior Jimmy Beckwith/Payne are still undefeated at 4-0.
