KALAMAZOO, Mich.- A school record four Western Michigan men's soccer players –
Nick Wysong,
Greg Timmer,
Sean Conerty and
Connor Furgason – were named All-Great Lakes Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) on Dec. 8. Both Timmer and Wysong collected second team honors, while Conerty and Furgason were tabbed third team.
Western Michigan has never had more than two all-region selections in a single season and this year's honorees are the first for Western Michigan since
Shane Lyons earned third team accolades in 2010. Timmer and Wysong become the school's first second team selections since Jeff Hughes in 2003. Prior this year's four award winners, Western Michigan had just five all-region selections dating back to 2003.
Only Creighton and Georgetown had more selections in the region than Western Michigan, each with five. The Broncos had the most out of the Mid-American Conference, one better than Akron which placed three.
“I am very proud of these four young men and all they have accomplished, not just this year but in their careers as a whole,” said WMU head coach
Chad Wiseman. “All four guys are extremely deserving of these accolades and they have certainly put their stamp in the Bronco soccer history books.
“The Great Lakes Region possesses some of the very best teams and players in the entire nation and it is fantastic to see Western Michigan recognized along side some of the best the college soccer has to offer. I am happy to see these players get rewarded for all of their efforts that I have had the pleasure to witness first hand over the last few seasons. These four men have made their teammates, staff, administrators and the entire Bronco soccer nation incredibly proud today.”
Wysong led WMU in goals (6), assists (6) and points (18) and ranked in the top-10 in the Mid-American Conference in all three categories. Timmer was one of three Broncos to start all 19 games and directed the team out of the center midfield, tallying one goal and one assist. Conerty totaled three goals and three assists and registered the game-tying goal in a 1-1 tie against nationally No. 5 ranked Akron and the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over Buffalo. WMU's starting center back for the last three seasons, Furgason helped WMU post a school-record 12 shutouts in 2015 and contributed three goals offensively.
Western Michigan produced one of the best seasons in school history, finishing with an 11-4-4 overall 3-1-1 MAC record and a No. 9 Great Lakes Regional ranking. The 11 wins was one shy of tying the school record of 12, accomplished in 1988 and 2003. WMU's 12 shutouts eclipsed the previous record of nine which had stood since 1988.
Western Michigan cracked the
TopDrawerSoccer national top 25 poll for the first time in school history and was ranked in back-to-back weeks. The Broncos debuted in poll at No. 24 on Sept. 14 and moved up to No. 18 on Sept. 21.
A record setting four Broncos (including Wysong, Conerty and Furgason) were named First Team All-MAC and two other players earned Second Team honors, as Western Michigan totaled six players on this year's All-MAC team. Head coach
Chad Wiseman was voted as Coach of the Year, becoming the second coach in school history to be named MAC Coach of the Year, joining former head coach
Chris Karwoski who was recognized in 2003. Wiseman was an assistant coach for Karwoski that season.
