KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan men's tennis team will continue its springtime tradition of participating in the oldest collegiate tennis tournament in the country, when the Broncos travel to the HEB Tournament of Champions hosted by Texas A&M - Corpus Christi.
The tournament, now in its 47th year of existence, features a field comprised of top tennis talent from around the nation. The Broncos' weekend will begin with two matches on Friday, with the Lousiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns the first test on the slate. This will be the second meeting between the Broncos and the Ragin' Cajuns, with ULL holding the 1-0 advantage in the series.
After that, the Broncos will face either #30 Brigham Young or the hosting Islanders later on Friday. The tournament will wrap on Saturday, with possibilities for opponents including Texas - San Antonio, #34 Middle Tennessee State, DePaul, and South Alabama.
PILING UP THE AWARDS
Nadin Indre has been stacking up the weekly awards in the Mid-American conference in the early portion of the schedule, winning the MAC Player of the Week honors on Feb. 27 for the second time this season. Indre was dominant in singles play against top-flight competition last week, registering No. 1 singles wins against #36 Drake and Iowa. Indre defeated the #72 singles player in the country in Drake's James McKie on Saturday, controlling the tempo in defeating McKie 6-2, 6-2 in the Broncos' loss to the Bulldogs.
Indre continued his inspired play on Sunday, earning both a singles and doubles win against the Hawkeyes. Indre teamed with
Ruben Greiner to defeat the Hawkeyes' Michael Swank and Garret Dunn 8-6 in No. 1 doubles play, and went on to beat Matt Hagan 6-3, 6-2.
Indre is 11-3 overall in singles play this year, including a 10-2 in dual matches and a 9-2 record at No. 1. In addition to the MAC Player of the Week award, he is a two-time recipient of the MAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week award this year.
DUAL MATCH DYNAMOS
The Broncos have been excellent in dual match singles thus far in 2013, improving greatly on their performance in the fall to start with a great record against tough competition. After posting just a 44-54 (.449) mark in fall singles play, the Broncos are 50-28 (.641) in the spring, upping their total win-loss record in singles play to 94-82 (.534).
