KALAMAZOO, Mich.-- Western Michigan baseball travels to Oral Roberts this weekend for a three-game series, March 12-14. First pitch of game one Friday is at 4 p.m. ET.
QUICK GLANCE AT THE TWO TEAMSAfter getting off to a slow start with seven straight losses, Western Michigan has won two of its last three, defeating Villanova and Butler. Oral Roberts is on a two-game losing streak and is 2-5 on the season after dropping a pair of losses at Baylor. WMU is batting .287 this season, while ORU is hitting .266 as a team.
ON THE ROAD AGAINWestern Michigan continues its stretch on the road, opening 2010 with 17 consecutive away games. WMU travels to Indiana State next weekend for a four-game set. The Broncos return to Kalamazoo for their home opener against Concordia Wednesday, March 24 and begin Mid-American Conference play with a home series against Akron over the weekend. It will be just the second home game of the year for Oral Roberts. In the other outing, the Golden Eagles defeated Central Arkansas, 4-3, in 10 innings.
FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIMEA number of Broncos recorded career “firsts” this past week. The most noteworthy of those include: sophomore right-hander
Casey Hall earned his first career victory against Butler, striking out five and allowing just one run on six hits in seven innings. Hitting their first collegiate home runs were sophomores
Ryan McMillin (2) and
Brad Wehrmeyer, as well as freshman
Jimmy Martinez.
LEWIS TRYING TO LEAVE HIS MARKAlready setting the school record for consecutive games with a hit last year (25),
Chris Lewis looks to chase down another coveted Bronco record. The senior slugger entered the season with 184 career hits, 55 shy of
Mark Abro's 239. Lewis has 12 hits through 10 games this year, bringing his current total to 196, and is batting .308. Lewis also started off the 2010 season ranked in the top 15 in career RBIs and total bases.
GALBRAITH GOING FOR RECORDS TOOAt 5-9, senior outfielder
Kyle Galbraith doesn't appear to be the biggest threat at the plate, but opponents should be aware. After belting 13 home runs from the leadoff spot last year, Galbraith has put himself in a position to run down the career home runs record. Galbraith has yet to hit a long ball this season, but has 20 to his credit over the last three years, eight shy of the school record held by three former Broncos. Galbraith may also leave his name atop another list. He has been hit by a pitch 25 times in his career, four short of the record.
