CLEVELAND -- The Mid-American Conference announced the 2009-10 All-MAC Teams on Wednesday and Western Michigan is represented by senior guard David Kool and freshman forward Nate Hutcheson.
Kool was named to the All-MAC First Team for the second time in his career (2007-08) and All-MAC for the fourth time in his career as he was on the All-Freshman Team in 2006-07 and second team last season.
Kool joins Bob Adams (1950-51-52), Edgar Blair (1958-59), Manny Newsome (1962-63-64), Gene Ford (1968-69), Walker D. Russell (1981-82), Jim Havrilla (1990-92) and Ben Reed (2004-05) as two-time First Team All-MAC recipients.
Hutcheson was named to the All-MAC Freshman Team. Hutcheson is the 12th Bronco to ever make the squad of top first-year players and the fourth under head coach Steve Hawkins (Joe Reitz-2005, David Kool-2007, Flenard Whitfield-2009).
Kool leads the
Mid-American Conference with 20.9 points per game in all games, which
is 18th nationally, and 21.9 points per game in conference play. Kool
scored 22 or more points in 9-of-16 conference contests, including four
games of 30 points or more. Kool is the career leader in points at
Western Michigan with 2,057 (surpassing Manny Newsome's record of 1,787
set in 1964), which is ninth in MAC history. A four-time MAC West
Player of the Week and four-time MAC Male Scholar Athlete of the Week
this season, Kool ranks first in the MAC and 11th nationally in free
throw shooting (.895) and fifth in the MAC in steals (1.71 spg).
Kool has set a
school record this season with 187 made free throws and is the
conference's all-time leader in career free throws made with 583. On
the season, Kool also adds 4.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game, while
shooting 44.3 percent from the field and 35.4 percent behind the
three-point line.
Hutcheson played in all 31 games for the Broncos, including starting in each of the final 20. Hutcheson averages 5.6 points and 2.9 rebounds per game, while shooting 41.8 percent from the field and 34.8 percent behind the three-point line.
The Broncos (17-14) play Central Michigan (15-14) in the quarterfinals of the 2010 FirstEnergy MAC Tournament on Thursday at noon on FS Detroit, FS Ohio, ESPN Full Court, ESPN360.com and the Bronco Radio Network.
