AUBURNDALE, Fla.- Kansas State pounded out 27 hits and scored in every innings but two, defeating Western Michigan 27-8 Tuesday. Freshman Jimmy Martinez and sophomore Jamie Simpson each hit two-run homers for the Broncos.
Western Michigan scored a run in the first and third and plated a pair of runs in the fifth, sixth and ninth, but couldn't contain the Wildcat offense. Kansas State scored eight runs in the first and tallied 20 runs through the first four innings.
WMU's Dan Kneibel (0-1) was chased off the mound after one inning in his first career start, allowing all eight runs on seven hits. Patrick Duncan and Grant Simotes appeared in relief. It was just Simotes' second ever appearance on the mound in three seasons, typically spent roaming the infield. He started the game at third base before throwing the final 6.1 innings.
Kyle Galbraith doubled twice and Simotes once as each picked up three hits on the day. Galbraith and Simotes also scored three runs apiece.
Martinez hit his two-run shot in the sixth for his first career home run. Simpson's long ball came in the ninth for his second home run of the season. Jordan Easom led the team with three RBIs.
Three different players hit three-run homers for Kansas State, and the Wildcats hit four home runs total.
Kansas State improves to 6-1 on the season while Western Michigan falls to 0-6.
Western Michigan looks to get back on track tomorrow against Valparaiso at 3 p.m.
