Women?s Basketball Announces Team Awards

KALAMAZOO, Mich.‑ The Western Michigan women's basketball team held its annual end of the year banquet on March 30 at the Cityscape Event Center. Tiera DeLaHoussaye, Chandra Smith, Arianne Wilson and Jami Cynecki were among those collecting honors, as voted on by their teammates.

Team MVP - Tiera DeLaHoussaye
(5-6 ? Jr. ? G ? Detroit, Mich./Country Day)
DeLaHoussaye led the team in scoring (12.4), assists (7.8) and steals (3.3), while ranking second in rebounding (6.1). She was named to the All-MAC First Team, MAC Defensive Player of the Year, and set a conference record being named MAC Player of the Week on six occasions. DeLaHoussaye ranked third in the nation in assists and eighth in steals, leading the MAC in both. Dishing out 250 assists, she set the WMU single-season assist record. Additionally, she was one of 52 in the nation named as a regional All-American finalist. She will find out if she made the All-American cut the Thursday before the women's Final Four. She is looking to become just the sixth player at WMU to earn All-American status.

Most Inspirational - Chandra Smith
(5-8 ? Sr. ? G ? Plainfield, Ill./Benet Academy)
One of two seniors in 2007-08, Smith was known for her never give up attitude. She played in 25 contests, averaging 7.0 minutes per game. She finishes her career at WMU with 95 games played.

Most Improved - Arianne Wilson
(6-0 ? Jr. ? F ? Chicago, Ill./Southeastern Illinois CC/Washington)
A junior transfer from Southeastern Illinois, Wilson was in her first season in a Bronco uniform. Adjusting to a different system, Wilson made great strides throughout the year, showing improvement every day. She appeared in 21 games, setting career highs at Chicago State in minutes played (12), points (4) and rebounds (3).

Hustle Award - Jami Cynecki
(5-6 ? Fr. ? G ? Midland, Mich./Dow)
A freshman, Cynecki redshirted this season to recover from a foot injury sustained while still in high school. Cynecki could be seen around the gym putting in the long hours towards recovery. Able to participate in practices by the end of the season, she was a valuable member of the scout squad.

2007-08 Women's Basketball Notables:
? Featured 10 of 14 players that were freshmen or sophomores, with just two seniors ? Amanda Parker and Chandra Smith. WMU started two freshmen, a sophomore, a junior and a senior.

? Finished the season with an overall record of 13-19, and went 9-7 in MAC. Ranking first in the division for much of the year, Western Michigan was in contention for the MAC West until the final week of the regular season, in which it would place third.

? Won six of first seven MAC games and had three more total MAC wins than 2006-07.

? Scored the most points in a MAC Tournament game this season, beating Akron 84-54 in the first round.

? Had the fourth best scoring offense in the MAC, averaging 70.2 points per game. Six players averaged eight points or more a game.

? Shot a MAC-high 813 free throws, ranking second in the conference with a 73.8 free-throw percentage. WMU made more free throws (597) than eight other schools attempted.

? Defeated Bowling Green for the first time since the 2002-03 season, 79-73, beating the Falcons on the road on Jan. 30. Also defeated Eastern Michigan, 83-72, in Ypsilanti for the first time since the 2003-04 season.

? Tiera DeLaHoussaye was named All-MAC First Team, marking the for the seventh-straight season WMU has had a representative on the first team. She also became just the second WMU player to earn MAC Defensive Player of the Year honors.
