KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan junior point guard
Tiera DeLaHoussaye picked up her second Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week award after tallying 18 points, seven assists, five steals and four rebounds in the Broncos' near upset of Temple on Sunday.
DeLaHoussaye scored 14 of her team-high 18 points in the second half, as did five of her seven assists, as she helped WMU battle back from 13-point deficits twice in the second half to get within one basket of tying the game on three occasions. Her five steals tied a season-high.
Despite falling short, the effort put forth by Western Michigan was the best the MAC has had to offer against the Atlantic 10 powerhouse, as Temple escaped with a 72-68 victory. The Owls had beaten the previous three MAC opponents by an average margin of 34 points, defeating Central Michigan (83-45), Ball State (72-48) and Kent State (74-34). Additionally, WMU's 68 points were the most scored on Temple this season, and the Owls' four-point victory was their narrowest.
The Player of the Week Award is DeLaHoussaye's second of the season, having earned the honor the first week of the season (Nov. 12) after being named to the All-Tournament Team at the Women's Sport Foundation Challenge in Albuquerque, N.M.
The Detroit, Mich., native in the Broncos' top scorer (10.4 ppg) and leads the conference and is nationally ranked in assists (6.9) and steals per game (3.2).
Western Michigan is back in action on Dec. 22, traveling to Chicago State for a showdown with the Cougars at 2 p.m. (ET) at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center.
