DALLAS- Tiera DeLaHoussaye dropped in a season-high 22 points and nine different players scored, but it would not be enough as the Western Michigan women's basketball team (2-4) fell to Drake, 82-70, at SMU Hoops For the Cure Tournament Saturday. DeLaHoussaye was named to the all-tournament team.
Drake (3-3) took the lead on the opening tip and never gave it up, despite the Broncos' best efforts. Every time Western Michigan inched closer, Drake had an answer, often in the form of Jill Martin, who finished with a game-high 27 points. The Bulldogs were also very effective from long-range, making 11-of-21 three-pointers.
WMU got down by 17 points in the first half, and managed to cut the lead to six with 46 seconds remaining. Drake again came up with a big shot, hitting one of its seven first-half threes' at the buzzer to take a nine-point lead, 41-32, into the locker room.
Western Michigan nipped at the deficit in the second half, but after scoring on its second possession would never get closer than eight points the rest of the night.
Sara Vest was the only other player besides DeLaHoussaye to hit double figures for the Brown & Gold, totaling 10 points. Freshman Maria Iaquaniello came off the bench to chip in a career-high nine points in nine minutes played. Molly Dwyer also added nine.
Ebony Cleary led the Broncos on the boards for the second straight-game, collecting seven rebounds. DeLaHoussaye had eight assists and five rebounds.
The Brown & Gold shot 41 percent on the evening and 87 percent from the free-throw line. The Bulldogs were 45 percent from the floor and 53 percent from behind the arc. Drake edged WMU on the boards, 41-36.
Western Michigan continues its four-game road stretch next weekend, traveling to Washington, D.C., to face American on Dec. 1 and hops over to Princess Anne, Md., to take on Maryland-Eastern Shore on Dec. 3. The Broncos return to Kalamazoo the second and third weekends of December, hosting Illinois-Chicago (12/8) and Temple (12/16).
